The Dermapen™ is the original and best known member of the Dermapen™ family.

The Dermapen™ consists of two parts: an electric hand piece that plugs into the wall for a stable and consistent source of power, and a disposable needle tip, containing 12 microscopic needles. Once the needle tip is clicked into the hand piece, your Dermapen™ is ready for action. The internal motor of the Dermapen™, powered with revolutionary AOVN™ technology, causes the needles in the Dermapen Tip to oscillate at a rate of close to 110 revolutions per second. When the needle tip makes contact with the skin, the needles create tiny puncture in the skin's surface, causing micro-trauma, and inducing an immune response, and subsequently, the creation of new healthy collagen. The punctures also act as micro-channels that carry topical nutrients used during the treatment deep into skin layers for an increased effect. Because the needles oscillate as quickly as they do, the tip of the Dermapen™ easily *glides* across the skin, without catching or causing any dermal tearing.

This small, easy to operate device is able to produce similar, if not better, results to a fractional laser, without the risk of hyper or hypo-pigmentation, as well as other side effects and downtime associated with these effective, but potentially damaging ablative heat based treatments.

The Dermapen™ was the original micro needling system made available to the world market. Over the last few years, this has made the Dermapen™ the most widely used system by practitioners, as well as the most searched for automated needling treatment by the public. Moreover, being the original has given us the advantage of having continuous feedback from practitioners throughout the world. We have been able to assess what it is our clients loved about the device, but also what they thought the Dermapen™ lacked. We have been able to take that feedback and apply it to our product. The result is the Dermapen 3™.

How Does Micro-needling Work?

The Dermapen 3™ offers unparalleled collagen induction by harnessing the body's innate ability to re-grow and repair the skin as a response to micro-damage. This small, hand-held device delivers up to 1,300 micro punctures per second into the skin, thus stimulating the production of collagen and elastin and normalizing various skin functions.

Dermapen 3™’s controlled precision promotes the three phases of CIT mechanics, thus allowing for new collagen growth to occur.

The first phase begins with the release of the body’s own growth factors, followed by a cascade of new epidermal growth, fibroblast chemo-taxis, fibroblast proliferation, and matrix production.M

Release of Growth Factors - Dermapenworld

This proliferation of the body's tissue continues to release growth factors from fibroblasts, keratinocytes and monocytes, culminating in the second phase of CIT mechanics, where production of collagen I, III, and IV, elastin, proteoglycans and glycosoaminoglycans, and the process of angiogenesis occur.

Tissue Proliferation - Dermapenworld

The last phase of CIT and the desired result of a Dermapen™ Treatment is the tissue remodeling process, where the skin’s vascular matrix matures, causing skin to tighten. The body’s ability to remodel and heal itself is at the heart of this amazing product.

Moreover, because the process never involves heat or thermal energy, does not use harsh chemicals or cause unnecessary trauma, the skin heals quickly, requiring virtually no downtime.

Because the process activated via micro-needling essentially generates new healthy skin cells to replace aged or damaged ones, applications for the Dermapen™ are very diverse. The device has ben used to treat visible signs of aging, such as skin atrophy and wrinkles, as well as various types of scarring, stretch marks, several types of pigmentation disorders, sun damaged skin, hair loss, and much, much more.

In addition, the Dermapen™ is a fantastic drug delivery device. Any product applied to the skin during or immediately after a Dermapen™ Treatment is very easily absorbed into the skin, rendering it much more effective than with a traditional topical application.”

Micro Needling History

The idea of needling may have been around for hundreds, even thousands of years, starting with ancient Chinese, Indian and Egyptian health practices. However, cosmetic and medical needling as it is known today is a relatively new concept. Modern day micro needling consists of piercing the skin multiple times with very thin needles to deliver light trauma, thereby inducing an immune response. This is one of the approaches to something known as “fractional rejuvenation”.

The advantages of micro needling were first observed by Dr. Andre Camirand, following his efforts to camouflage hypertrophic scars on several of his patients by tattooing pigment into their skin. Dr. Camirand noted that a year or two later, the pigment had dissolved completely, and was replaced by actual melanin, while the scars themselves had also immensely improved in texture, appearance and color. This gave birth to the idea that trepanation of scars (coming from the Greek word – Trepanon: to bore) with the tattoo gun was responsible for their improvement and re-pigmentation.

It was then hypothesized, that puncturing the scar with a tattoo gun alone, without pigment, would break down collagen within the scar’s tissue, cause realignment and stimulate melanogenesis. The results of repetitive sessions on scars were reported by Camirand et al. to be more than good and typically consistent, since all of his patients benefited aesthetically from this type of treatment.

Following Dr Camirand's development, Dr. Des Fernandes introduced his own needling device: a small needle stamp that he used regularly in his surgical practice to induce collagen production. He delivered his first paper on skin needling of the upper lips at the ISAPS congress in Taipei in 1996.

In 2004, the first needle roller was introduced. A dermal roller is a small rolling pin, which, oddly enough, rolls across to skin’s surface, leaving behind a trail of microscopic punctures. This starts up an aseptic inflammation process, which will result in collagen production. The number of punctures caused by dermal rollers is much greater than the number of punctures created by a tattoo gun or any previously used method, but the roller presented many limitations. Different regions on the face and body require different depth of penetration, hence multiple single use rollers are required for a single patient. The roller is also unable to treat some of the harder to reach areas, such as those around the eyes and nose. The rolling action of the dermal roller also creates surface tears in the skin and causes unnecessary pain and discomfort for the patient during the procedure.

This is where the Dermapen™ comes in.

Unlike its less tech-savvy predecessor, the dermal roller, the Dermapen™ allows the user to adjust virtually every aspect of the treatment, tailoring it to each individual patient’s needs. Vertical needle insertion reduces pain, while the heavy duty motor backed by AOVN™ technology ensures the optimal number of punctures per second for getting the best results possible. The Dermapen™ combines results previously achievable only with the use of laser technologies, with the less damaging, heat-less approach of dermal rollers. The Dermapen™ is also able to treat hard to reach areas, such as those around the eyes and nose, making it much more versatile.

Since its introduction into the market, the Dermapen™ has been used to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, atrophied and sun damaged skin, multiple forms of scarring, and stretch marks. It has also been used to enhance the result of various applications targeting alopecia, keloid scarring, and vitiligo, among others.

Patient FAQ’s

Q: How many treatments are recommended for rejuvenation, acne scarring and stretch marks? (General guide)

A:Rejuvenation: 4-6 treatments, 4 weeks apart
Acne scarring: 6 treatments, 6 weeks apart
Stretch marks: 4-8 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart

Q: Should I prepare my skin before having a Dermapen™ Treatment?

A:For optimal results, a period of effective active treatment creams, such as Vitamin A, C or Resveratrol & Procyanidin is recommended to allow the skin’s strength to build-up (especially for thin or delicate skin areas). Consult your clinician about the recommended DP Dermaceuticals™ Pre- and Post- procedure protocol.

Q: How long should it take before I see results?

A:Typically, you will see results after the first treatment. Lasting and more significant results will occur after 4 to 6 treatments (spaced 4-6 weeks apart). Your skin will continue to improve over the next 6-12 months after a course of treatments and when combined with the recommended post treatment care.

Q: Is the treatment painful?

A:For minimum needle depths Dermapen™ Treatments are painless. Treatments over 0.5mm deep, may require a topical anesthetic cream to be applied for 15-40 minutes before the procedure. This will render the treatments virtually pain free.

Q: Is there any downtime after treatments?

A:Generally no, but you may experience facial redness for 12-48 hours after the treatment. Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately after the treatment. Application of a breathable camouflage will seal the skin and cover any redness for an immediate return to work.

Q: How soon after filler injections can I have a Dermapen™ Treatment?

A:It is recommended to wait at least 7 days after filler injections, so that any post treatment bruising from the fillers can settle. It is also possible to have your Dermapen™ Treatment several days before having fillers injected. Consult with your practitioner prior to determine exactly how long a wait is best in each particular case.

Q: How much does the treatment cost?

A:$450 per treatment
